Wheaton softball concluded a strong Spring Break trip with a record of 6-3 to get the season off to a solid start.
The Thunder traveled down to Clermont, Fla. for the Dot Richard Spring Games last week, picking up wins over Cornell, Monmouth, Hood and Transylvania, before taking on Bates College and Lakeland College on the final day of play, winning by scores of 9-1 and 8-2 to sweep the double header.
In the first game against Lakeland, the Thunder bats came alive with eight runs and 14 hits. Four Thunder players picked up multiple hits in the game, including junior Lyndsey Pritchard and freshman Julia Arthur, who each picked up three hits on the game. Arthur and junior Christina Sandstedt both picked up two RBIs as well. Junior Katie Thornton got the win, giving up just one earned run on four hits while striking out 10.
In the nightcap, Wheaton’s bats stayed hot with nine runs on eight hits. Once again, Pritchard led the way at the plate with hit and a pair of RBIs, while junior Alyssa Leonard picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run, and Sandstedt and senior Ellen Radandt each drove in a pair on one hit. In five innings, sophomore Abby Butler got the win on the mound, giving up just two hits and one unearned run to move to 2-0 on the season.
After a double header at Aurora University, Wheaton hosts Lake Forest College at Ruth Leedy Field for a pair of afternoon games on Saturday. First pitch will be at 1 p.m. Thursday’s games against Aurora will be covered in next week’s Record.
