The Thunder finally returned home on Wednesday for a game against conference foe Augustana. The Vikings came into the game 10-5-1 and coming off a big 3-2 victory over North Park on Saturday. While Augie helped Wheaton’s CCIW title hopes then, on this night they were thinking another upset.
The Vikings almost struck first when they were awarded a penalty kick in the opening minutes. However, Wheaton’s senior keeper Matt Paprocki was up to the task and kept the ball out of the net. The following half hour was chippy with both sides committing fouls left and right, but the Thunder finally broke through in the 38th minute when senior Adam Blackman took a pass from senior Noah Anthony and found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
In the second half, Wheaton added to their lead when senior Jordan Golz scored his sixth goal of the season unassisted, a goal
that came just 17 seconds after Augustana’s Michael Brazinski took a yellow card. Noah Anthony then got a goal of his own 20 minutes later, his sixth of the season, assisted by senior Brendan Finnerty and junior Elliot Borge. That 3-0 score would hold as final.
The Thunder outshot Augie convincingly 16-9, holding the 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Blackman and Anthony each had four shots with Blackman putting three on goal. The Thunder defense continued their habit of making Matt Paprocki’s night easy, as Paprocki turned away the only two shots he faced all night.
The Thunder will conclude the regular season in Chicago on Saturday for the big rivalry game against North Park. The winner of the game will take the CCIW regular season title and the top seed for the CCIW tournament which begins on Wednesday. Kickoff for the North Park game is at 7:30 p.m.
